Slack just released video chat and they've had screen sharing for some time. Teams should start feeling a bit nervous.
- vxNsr 4y agoSlack created the category and had a 2 year head start, the fact that they are being rapidly replaced by teams in many office environments has little to do with specific features in teams vs slack. It’s entirely because you get teams “free” with the e5 office license that you need to buy anyways for outlook, excel, etc.
- tkk23 4y agoSlack should invest in Libreoffice and offer a better office suite.
- whywhywhywhy 4y agoAn offline locally running office suite has very little value in a post-google docs world to corporations.
- tkk23 4y agoDoesn't Google use the Libreoffice code on the server side? You still need at least a locally running spreadsheet application for the Excel wizards. If I were Google or Slack, I would push Libreoffice Calc to be better than Excel. Only then will big companies be able to use an MS Office alternative.
- whywhywhywhy 4y agoI might be wrong but I assumed the popularity of running Excel locally wasn't because it was local but because that's where Excel ran and Excel is what they're in love with.
- tkk23 4y agoI also might be wrong but I assumed that a local app still has an edge over a website. This [1] is an old video about how Excel is used professionally. If that's not possible then the website is not good enough. [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12450070 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12450070
- skc 4y agoWhich is odd because Slack was the leader in this space just a few years ago.
- dopeboy 4y agoThe Teams moat is bulletproof. This is proven by the fact that their product is objectively worse yet will never lose market share because it is “free”
