Managing gen z is like working with people from another country
- trasz 4y agoI believe the fundamental problem here is that Gen Z got a much better understanding of the world around them, while the older folks tend to deeply believe in “common falsehoods” about economy and society.
- raxxorraxor 4y agoHave you an example of these common falsehoods? I think it fundamentally depends on the topic. Finally a generation raised by the internet. Although this assessment sounds awfully familiar.
- selfhoster11 4y agoOff the top of my head: "hard work will be rewarded eventually", "it's pretty easy to save up for a mortgage deposit, you just gotta give up a few luxuries". The list is much longer than that, but at least these two items would be on it in the majority of Western countries.
- wrp 4y agoKey quotes: Gen Z attitudes that may come across as lazy or entitled to a more seasoned worker are actually just different values and different approaches. They can't perform [t]asks like making small talk with a client or writing a professional email... Managers who work with and manage Gen Z employees likely need to be patient and detailed in their requests. ...you can’t make assumptions that everyone understands implicit codes of conduct. Concludes that managers can't just dictate office policy, but must provide convincing justifications.
- zhte415 4y agoI'm not sure to focus on an etymological classification based on generation of a population makes a lot of sense for advice for a specific industry over thinking about the actual split in the vastly smaller sub-group that work, have self selected to work, in a particular company or industry. Part of the equation, sure, perhaps, but perhaps changes in those that choose the company/industry could be provide a stronger basis for thoughtful comment or analysis. Or lacking that, just treat everyone as people and make your interaction case by case instead of being based on a short Fortune article
- graderjs 4y agoWhat's the membership criteria for Gen z? Can I apply to join? What year does it include?
- selfhoster11 4y agoAs for the "unwritten" rules - we (Gen Z +/- a few years around that) can't read your mind. Either tell us what you want, or stop wasting our time by expecting us to guesstimate what people of your cohort may consider acceptable or not. We didn't grow up alongside you, how in the world would we know? > Tasks like making small talk with a client or writing a professional email is a no-brainer for those who have been employed for years. But many in this youngest generation didn’t grow up doing those things, or have been out of practice during the pandemic. Who could have suspected that 20-somethings don't have the business and soft skills of seasoned 40-somethings with years of industry experience.
- gsatic 4y agoCorporate wonderland, after outsourcing everything possible, already has enough experience dealing with people from other countries, so what are they even crying about? Bunch of unimaginative mindless robots.
