I thought to myself...is there anything else out there that may show a similar clue. So I searched for a common known lung cancer cause...asbestos. By searching (using wrong search terms) for "fungus growing on asbestos" I scrolled down and found this. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6754414/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6754414/ Aspergillus is also mentioned in the linked paper. I do not have the background to evaluate....but interesting. Maybe another link.
