The comments seem to be in conflict with the content of the blog post. The author seems to be lamenting what is feasible more or less, but seems uninterested in putting in the extra effort to keep up or anticipate the expectations or demands of the modern web. It almost as if his nostalgia is at war with whatever tastes he has acquired technologically since his college days. Maybe he can compromise by caring less about the demands or expectations about the modern web.

I don't think anyone expected high availability from their living room web servers; if they did, they either discovered that was not feasible, or moved their web server somewhere else. And that was FINE. Sometimes, a server with a forum or a website you really liked would go down. Then there'd be an update with a quickly-written note in HTML announcing that the server had some failure and restoration was in process. Then it'd come back when the owner had the time and cash to get it back up and running, maybe along with a story about what happened.
