I think living within proximity of something that gives ample social opportunity is a big deal. I guess that's why the suburbs have always been appealing to many Americans. I grew up in an area (also upstate NY) where I could ride my bike at 1am and not see any cars for minutes at a time, but I could get to a big-enough city in 20ish minutes. I feel like that's a good mix for a lot of us. Ithica seems like a bit more extreme version of that, but with a much larger city near by as well.
