Miners and Murdoch media managed to get enough people to vote against the best interests of their country
i.e. for Abbott whose first core promise was to "Axe The Tax" (newly created resource extraction tax) that would have netted massive dollars for national benefit.
The payoff for Murdoch was being granted regional monopolies inserting his copper coax cable as the mandatory tollgate in the barely begun Fibre-to-the-Home network which downgraded the national service to Fibre-to-the-Node/Kerb (and becoming a costly power sucking bandwidth throttle) and Abbot promised it would cost half the original FttP rollout that had just commenced, except adding Murdoch's coax cost 400% more than expected. So now our monthly bills are double the price they would have been if proper FttP rollout was allowed to continue, and in return we got a measly 5% the future capacity.
