I did the same, rural to city to suburbs. Suburbs near a major metro is a great option. I have everything I want near me and a house with a yard. I wouldn't mind going somewhere much much smaller and more rural if I didn't have kids. But, I don't want to send them to rural schools and I don't want them to grow up somewhere without opportunity. Selfishly, I want them to grow up somewhere that will give them a reason to stay when they get older, so that they stay nearby.
