Thanks. One theme (autumn_night) has a black background. Next up: keys suck. I often use dw or d/something and these fail. Any quick way to resolve?

  No. And I hope there never will be. It's a different editor with its own ideas about how modal editing should be done. It does not sound like that has your interest. That's fine. Stick with vim.
