In my opinion VR is not a fad but the ‘VR is going to take over the world’ seems like an industry mantra that is more wishful thinking than reality. But VR will be the primary mode of interactions for certain niches and will flourish there and will disrupt some areas but I personally see AR more like an ubiquitous mode of operation for technology in the future.
- parker_mountain 4y agoIt's extremely clear that VR will, for the next decade at least, be anything as a semi-niche entertainment format. AR will be the future, and VR will only take off when AR is ubiquitous and the AR hardware can be used to deliver VR content/experiences. I think the premise of current consumer VR investments and experiences (Meta, ahem), are wasted money - the future will be something like a miniaturized magicleap/hololens. Unlike the 90s, I think a lot of the required hardware precursors for success exist. The remaining "hard" precursors are display tech and interaction methods/input. When that's solved, then we will have at least the required baseline for building decent AR/VR experiences.
