I wonder what the cost of building 14-220 DD is compared to solar panels of the same nominal wattage. I assume wind turbines are relatively simpler technology and thus more cost effective.

"In 2021, the cost of installed offshore wind energy worldwide averaged 2,858 U.S. dollars per kilowatt, a year-over-year decrease of over 12 percent." (graph of price decrease shown) According to: https://www.ny-engineers.com/blog/breaking-down-the-price-of-solar-power-systems https://www.ny-engineers.com/blog/breaking-down-the-price-of... "100 MW Fixed Tilt Utility $0.83 / watt" so $830 per kW. - Symbiote 4y agoThe sea around Scotland is where these enormous turbines will first be installed. [1] says in the UK, offshore wind power is now slightly cheaper than on-land wind or solar. I assume the economics depends very much on the expected amount of wind and sun in a particular location, as well as the expected demand at those times. But until that red gas line is close to zero when the blue wind line is very high, it should make sense to build more wind turbines and solar panels [2]. - Schroedingersat 4y agoSolar modules + inverters are about 40c a nameplate watt (or $1.60 per net watt in good conditions). The land, installation and maintenance roughly adds half to as much again. Onshore wind is about the same TCO. More up front cost for the turbine and construction at around $1-1.3 per nameplate watt. Offshore is about double. Wind has substantial advantages in terms of being uncorrellated with other wind and anti-correllated with solar.
