  Not the guy you're replying to although I subcommented when I ought to have replied to you. The notation often suggests a manner of thinking about an idea that most won't be able to see in the expanded notations. As such those familiar with the field often abstract away the minutia. I always heard a rather unfair terse statement about science. If you have to read the articles introduction section, you probably shouldn't be reading the article. That's wildly unfair but does reflect that academia is mostly concerned with academics in the same field.
