I was showing a friend what this whole thing about "programming" is; since my friend had experience with Excel advanced functions but not very computer-literate, I just wanted to focus on showing the basics of the language itself first and not the whole environment.
And it was fun! But you see, I didn't want to bother with explaining how to setup Node.js, or that in the browser console there's a lot of issues for learning (it remembers variables so you cannot just write, CSS issues, etc). I tried some code runners, I am familiar with Codesandbox, JSFiddle, etc. but these are still _too complex_ for what I wanted! I just wanted a place to write some JS, and see the colored output, or an error if there's an error. Maybe multiple "pages" for trying different things at once, but nothing fancy at all.
So I just launched my editor and made it over the weekend. It took me ~4h, of which 1h was general setup (Create-React-App, domain, etc), another hour was getting a bug, finding it in the lib I was using, copying the main code and fixing it within my project, and then 1.5-2h with some refinements and coloring the output.
I was surprised at how fast it was, when you find the right libraries it's a breeze to do something like this in JS-land nowadays and I'm pretty happy with the result. Will test next week and report back!
