As a developer, as a data scientist, as a designer, as a business leader, you are responsible for things like this. Do not make excuses. Do not disclaim liability. Acknowledge the mistake and fix it. We can do better.
- paulpauper 4y agoamazon has so many products and so many customers that it's inevitable something like this will happen no matter how hard you try to prevent it.
- hdjjhhvvhga 4y agoThat's why you need to make a real effort to prevent things like this one from happening (identify critical areas, make necessary changes) and when it happens, take an action immediately.
- foepys 4y agoBillions in profits and apparently no way to prevent this because "Amazon is big".
- capableweb 4y agoI'm sorry, not sure I understand correctly. What are they supposed to do here exactly? I understand and agree that if there is something ethically or morally wrong, we as humans should do something to avoid that, absolutely. I'm just asking to have it clarified for myself what the actual problem is here, and what possible solutions there could be.
- CPLX 4y agoThey’re not supposed to say hey are you trying to kill yourself let me help with that.
- catiopatio 4y agoThey didn’t. These journalists, on the other hand, have parroted the lawsuit’s PR campaign for clicks, and in doing so, have actively, purposefully, and knowingly spread this social contagion farther than Amazon ever could through their inadvertent recommendations.
- ComplexSystems 4y agoThey should not recommend buying those items together.
- adrianN 4y agoI don't see how you can prevent this from happening without banning recommendations completely. There are lots of ways to combine items so that they become dangerous. I don't think even a human in the loop could prevent "suicide kits" reliably.
- CPLX 4y agoI went to my local hardware store the other day to buy a rope. The owner did recommend some good rope options, and he didn't offer me a handy guide to tying a noose and killing myself. So it's possible. I'd venture to guess that store has never actually given teens advice on how to kill themselves. If they were I bet they wouldn't stay in business long. We don't have to excuse these big tech companies for the consequences of what they do. We just don't. We can demand they don't freeze accounts and keep people's money without letting them talk to a human, we can demand they don't recommend harmful products or send counterfeit goods to people, we can demand they don't evade labor laws or local zoning laws. We don't have to put up with this bullshit. I don't give a fuck if Amazon's recommendations engine is cost effective for them. Their business model isn't my fucking problem they need to exist in society in a healthy positive way just like everyone else or they can go out of business.

- ec109685 4y agoThey don’t incest enough in these areas. Despite repeated identification of things like fake flash disks, they refuse to do anything about it: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/avoid-these-fake-1-and-2tb-flash-drives-on-amazon-and-other-sites.309322/ https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/avoid-these-fake-1-and-2t... Having “suicide” as a suggestion for this search shows trust and safety isn’t high enough of a priority.
