Awesome. There needs to be a federal program in the USA to help (force) every city to convert every single one of their public transport and school buses to hydrogen. Garbage trucks would be a nice bonus.
They all go back to a central depot every day/night and the amount of pollution their engines put out right next to people every day is staggering. Every time one of them goes by me as a pedestrian makes me gag. Can't imagine what that does to someone's health over a lifetime.
- Schroedingersat 4y agoWe have a great way of distributing energy with no local pollution over a fixed route. It's called a wire. Light rail also doesn't create pm2.5 pollution from tyres.
- bombcar 4y agoI suspect you could math it out and the result wouldn’t be that much. Also they could have already converted those to CNG or propane if they’d wanted to.
- elil17 4y agoAir pollution is estimated to contribute to 7 million premature deaths each year (https://www.who.int/health-topics/air-pollution#tab=tab_2 https://www.who.int/health-topics/air-pollution#tab=tab_2). That's about one in ten deaths where air pollution was a factor (obviously it's somewhat complicated because things like lung problems don't have a single clean cause).
- bombcar 4y agoI haven’t run the math but the percentage of air pollution caused by garbage trucks is probably relatively small.
- elil17 4y agoAs I understand it this technology would work for many diesel vehicles.
- TEP_Kim_Il_Sung 4y agoDihydrogen-monoxide causes more deaths, and it is one of the main waste compounds released by hydrogen engines. (The others being Hydric Acid, and Hydronium-hydroxide) https://dhmo.org/ https://dhmo.org/
- Hnrobert42 4y agoYou mean water? What are you doing?
- elil17 4y agoWhat the heck do you even mean? What even is a water-caused death? I suppose humidity/heat related deaths might count, although those are tens or maybe hundreds of thousands and hydrogen combustion would have a negligible contribution to the weather. Perhaps you mean overhydration? That's probably only a few dozen or so people unless you count deaths from MDMA-related overhydration, and even then it is still very few deaths overall. There are specific biological reasons that lead scientists to attribute certain deaths to air pollution. For instance, we know that PM2.5 can be absorbed through the lungs and we've seen that it forms masses in the veins and arteries that can cause heart attacks.

- elil17 4y agoThat is a joke website. Air pollution actually kills people.
- 650REDHAIR 4y agoTheir tires are just as bad for you. It’s all bad.
- Hnrobert42 4y agoOne thing at a time. Don’t be a cynic.
- TEP_Kim_Il_Sung 4y agoGet ready for high humidity and rain. I'm sure nothing important will be blamed for the increase in flooding.
- Hnrobert42 4y agoHave they done a study to show the amount of humidity or rain that would be caused even if 100% of diesel engines were retrofitted? I’d suggest that if your speculation is correct, then the American southwest would desperately love be that effect
- TEP_Kim_Il_Sung 4y agoThey know the effect of water vapor on local weather. Steam used to be prevalent in industrial sociedad. Also oceans.
