S.F. plans to rezone the city to allow the production of just 34,000 new homes
- moneycantbuy 4y agosf isn’t for me anymore. it was okay for getting job experience but the housing has always been squalor. always needed housemates, even when making >$100k/yr. i am currently in an apartment there, unable to get good sleep due to constant noise/vibrations of people stomping around above and in the stairwell next to my bed. streets lined with homeless, hypodermic needles etc. all for the pleasure of a long commute into an empty office for a product that will likely never see the light of day. hoping i can find meaningful community with decent housing and a living wage elsewhere. open to suggestions.
- yrgulation 4y agoRemote work. There are many pushing hard against it, for various selfish reasons, but in my view its here to stay. Gives you the freedom to move anywhere. I am not from the us, but the uk has a similar issue with london. Crime, overcrowding, pollution, expensive housing, have killed the love for that city for me.
- bicx 4y agoI’m enjoying chill vibes over here in Alameda.
- diebeforei485 4y agoThe places with long commutes to the office tend to not have hypodermic needles.
- pknomad 4y agoSame. I came to this realization during the pandemic. I loved the tech and startup culture but that only holds your interest for so long. I would love to live somewhere cheaper and has more vibrant small city life.
- fakethenews2022 4y agoFunny how the new housing goes into the heavily Chinese American areas of the city but completely sidesteps the richer white areas like Russian Hill, Seacliff, Marina, Cow Hollow, St Francis Wood, and Cole Valley. Those rich white areas have even less new housing development. https://www.foundsf.org/index.php?title=File:Racial-distribution-map-2010-san-francisco.jpg https://www.foundsf.org/index.php?title=File:Racial-distribu...
- randyrand 4y agoNot any surprise. The Chinese American population is one of the most politically connected and represented in SF. They’re able to get this kind of legislation through just a little easier. Also, the housing in sunset is some of the worst, so I imagine it was pushed harder for, too.
- fakethenews2022 4y agoYou completely misunderstand or are completely disingenuous. Also your facts are completely wrong. The most politically connected have always been the Pacific Heights folks. Think Getty, Gavin Newsom's patron. The Asian population of San Francisco is about 33%. It has had a grand total of 1 Asian mayor in its entire history and he was initially appointed. Behind the scenes politics in San Francisco has always been dominated by money and that money is virtually all white. Think Getty, Shorenstein, etc before and now Conway, Benioff, etc... You are most likely completely disingenuous. Guess which parts of San Francisco don't have tram lines and don't want them?
- stjohnswarts 4y agoUntil SF gives the NIMBYs the middle finger and goes ahead and completely revises the zoning laws to open up a whole lot more the housing crisis will continue, this is a bandaid that gives into NIMBYism yet again.
