I think three things are driving Zucks metaverse play:
1. He needed to escape scandal engulfing his whole company, rebranding to meta has been a grand distraction probably buying him multiple years away from scrutiny as everyone is distracted with his "cyberspace 2.0" vision.
2. Apple has squeezed the cash cow, ad sales are stuffed on iPhone now. It's like a drug dealer banned from the best nightclubs. In desperation they try to open their own club where people can buy all their wares. In this case a place where he can set all the rules and sell as much ads and collect as much data as he wants. Sort of “Screw this we need to make our own space for people to hang out.. aha meta space/verse.”
3. His hardware play is already on VR, and with Occulus etc he has the hardware but he needs to build the narrative or his hardware is all just niche novelty tech. If he can make the Metaverse ‘important’ his hardware could turn into the new Facebook platform (to rival apple's vertical integration)
That's my take. I'm skeptical of long term success. If I see AR/VR glasses starting to breakthrough mainstream I'd reassess.
Just been mulling over this. My 2 cents. Of course I could be missing all the signs of the next big thing, but honestly I don’t think so.
