As far as I understand it, Putin’s actions are motivated by the belief that in order to continue to exist meaningfully as an imperial superpower Russia must have a sphere of influence whereby it dominates politically and economically those countries on its western borders. I’m not sure there’s any possible dialog that will change his mind, particularly now he’s staked the country’s military reputation on being able to defeat Ukraine - he’s “all in”, afiacs - hence the (previously unthinkable) nuclear sabre rattling.
