The beauty of threading vs multiprocessing is shared memory. Threading is thusly much easier. The worst part of this whole GIL issue is that you are successfully using threading for the longest time and then suddenly you have performance problems in your threads and it doesn't seem to be clear as to why. Eventually you find out about this problem. Going to other languages for help to avoid the GIL doesn't seem like a solution to me. The solution to me is to bite the bullet and immediately go to multiprocessing. Avoid threading altogether.
