I very much against what Putin is doing with the Ukraine and Russia. The sooner this abomination is gone the better. However I am under the impression that until their own troubles started Ukraine would not give a flying fuck about Northern territories.
- noobermin 4y agoThis is clearly them taunting Putin and Russia.
- isthisthingon99 4y agoOr trying to ally japan against russia
- FpUser 4y ago>"Or trying to ally japan against russia" Putin is doing this part just fine on his own. No need for external "help".
- konsolebox 4y agoHow are they not automatically allies yet?
- app4soft 4y agoUkraine & Japan always had good relations[0], so actual step is more about confirming longstanding friendship. [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan%E2%80%93Ukraine_relations https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan%E2%80%93Ukraine_relation...
- isthisthingon99 4y agoMakes sense, I meant to say it is more like they are deliberately poking Japan to notice Russia is occupying lands they are interested in.
- shmerl 4y agoPR move obviously, but why not.

- kps 4y agoThe population of the largest island, Iturup, at least is majority ethnic Ukranian. Arguably Ukraine has a greater claim than Russia to be the successor of the USSR's holding there, and it wouldn't be at all surprising if a referendum held today chose Japanese administration over Russian.

- justsomehnguy 4y agoAhahah. So you claim is what at some place the majority of population is ethnic $nationality, so those people have a greater claim than $current_country to be successor of USSR's holding there. Right? Now insert 'russians' and 'Donetsk|Lugansk' there and suddenly this whole sentence stops working for some reason. That's blatant hypocrisy.
- lostmsu 4y ago> That's blatant hypocrisy. You got the joke then.
- yamtaddle 4y agoThe usual situation with these kinds of things is that they're not super valuable or vitally important claims and even allies shy away from strong support to avoid upsetting the geopolitical kettle over something minor. ... but if you're already at war with the power you'd be upsetting, screw it, why not?
