US hits China with sweeping tech export controls
- DiogenesKynikos 4y agoThis is a very significant escalation. With previous measures, the US government tried to at least superficially claim that it was reacting to specific national security threats ("We think that company X sells chips to the PLA."). There's no pretence any more, and it's clear that these new measures are aimed at sabotaging the entire Chinese semiconductor industry. It remains to be seen how China will respond. Will it retaliate against American companies, such as Boeing, that do a large amount of business in China? Or will the Chinese government decide that these latest American actions only harm the US more than they harm China, and simply push ahead with its own indigenization efforts?
