Brute forcing protected ZIP archives in Rust
- jaclaz 4y agoTL;DR: A simple brute force tool that tops at 4,500 password/second, 25 years expected for a 7 character password, the Author essentially wrote a tool that is way too slow for any practical use (in reasonable times), it is interesting if seen as a tutorial, but that's it. As pure anecdata, the only time I actually needed to recover a lost password for a zip archive, I was lucky enough that a known plain text attack was possible on that particular archive, even much faster "professional" tools had time estimation for brute forcing in years, unless you greatly reduced the space with some parts of the password. Anyway, I believe that nowadays such "professional" programs running on a (powerful) dedicated GPU may go between 3,000,000 and 5,000,000 passwords per second.
