Yes there are other ways of writing and reading spreadsheets but sadly none are as reliable as using Excel interop. At least if your spreadsheet has to be compatible with Excel. It is possible someone has build an amazing library that does this but I'm not aware of it. Edit: I could have Windows on a VM but that is awkward and slow. I find I get more done without that added bit of complexity.
