- ncmncm 4y agoLots of universities have their own reactor. They are used for a variety of research activities almost all wholly unrelated to generating power. Sometimes you need samples irradiated, other times you need to synthesize custom radioactive isotopes. These reactors pose no risk. The radioisotopes produced could in principle be misused, but are in any case very small amounts.
