The death of Silicon Valley has been stated and overstated for decades now. This isn’t the first “exodus” we’ve had, and it won’t be the last. But somehow, new blood finds their way back here every time.
- jjtheblunt 4y agoDoes the new blood finding their way back depend on H1B programs? (I actually do not know one way or the other, but am aware of that topic.)
- borski 4y agoNope. Well, yes, but not solely. H1B visas don't tend to change based on the other ups and downs of the valley.
- jjtheblunt 4y agoI mean would a refill of valley residents be disproportionately (compared to other metropolitan areas) holders of H1B visas.
- borski 4y agoI knew what you meant. No.
- yazzku 4y agoI'm not even going any further than HN comments on this one. NYPost (and also SFChronicle) were constantly talking about this 'exodus' during COVID. How everyone was leaving; how the U-Hauls were cheaper in the egress direction. Seemed like complete and utter BS. I'm sure they made a lot of revenue from ads though.
- billylindeman 4y agoTo be fair, I did leave during COVID and it was actually impossible to get a Uhaul (September 2020). Moving back to SF in the next month for a new gig (after the startup I was working for ran out of cash and laid everyone off).
- borski 4y agoThat was largely true everywhere. It is also still impossible to find a rental car.
- m463 4y agoI remember moving half way across the country to silicon valley in the 1990's and a giant brand-new diesel rental truck was a super-cheap $400. I don't think things have really changed. There is no exodus, people move to silicon valley to work, for a few years or decades, until they get sick of it or retire, then move out. Someone always takes their place, for a job and/or the weather, and housing prices fluctuate a little but always keep climbing.
- httpz 4y agoI'm just annoyed with the word "death" being thrown around for the slightest decline or slow down. When a person hits their late teens and stops growing in height, you don't say death is the only thing awaiting them.
- borski 4y agoAmen.
