Marc Andreessen compares California to Rome circa 250 A.D
- puffoflogic 4y ago> No one is quite sure why. On the contrary, quite a lot of people know precisely why, we're just not allowed to say.

- DowsingSpoon 4y agoWell don’t leave us in the dark. Speak your mind.
- LazarWolf_ 4y agoCrime, taxes, cost of living. Groupthink. Homelessness. Drugs. Fecal matter. Lack of accountability in public officials. This has been my experience living in California for the last 10.5 years. In 2020 California literally tried to rollback Civil Rights era legislation with Prop 16 because it has a preference for particular races and genders that isn’t mine.
- arpowers 4y agoWe aren’t at the “crisis of the third century” level yet… but certainly looks like we’re headed there…

- syntheweave 4y agoHe is saying this because the state has started enforcing affordable housing goals for every city with streamlined approvals for developers building to the state's codes, instead of letting 95% of the cities kick the can at each other with red tape and pay-to-play. This inevitably means row houses near his Atherton and Malibu mansions.
- jelliclesfarm 4y agoI don’t think that’s how Rome declined. Affordable housing with a high density plan isn’t the solution. Making every city liveable by creating networked public transport and robust infrastructure is the solution. The former strategy of high density will choke liveable cities and make housing even more unaffordable. More tier 3 cities should be raised to the same standard of living as Bay Area cities. If MA supported high density in Bay Area and then backed off, it’s very peculiar indeed. Inconsistent and doesn’t inspire trust or confidence.
