Other commenters have a good bunch of resources on what to do, but if you're really interested in understanding the fundamentals imo there's no better way than to RTFM. Sometimes the manual will have things you don't understand, and then you'll have to google that thing.
For networking I highly recommend the RHEL docs (https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html/networking_guide/index https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterp...). There's a big chunk that's useless to you (infiniband, etc), but the basics of the TCP/IP stack is really good to know. It looks like ubuntu has some introductory material too at (https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/network-introduction https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/network-introduction) with links to more in-depth resources.
For the rest of linux, again I highly recommend the redhat docs here https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/9 https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterp.... They're very will written and comprehensive, so feel free to skip all the stuff that you don't care about (printers, SElinux, etc).
- kickaha 4y agoYes! THANK YOU! I am so grateful for all the replies, but this may ultimately be among the most useful. If I could go back and reframe my question, it would be “Which FM should I R?” :-)
- e63f67dd-065b 4y agoI almost forgot but back in my day there was a big effort in The Linux Documentation Project, or TLDP. They put out a bunch of good stuff at https://tldp.org/guides.html https://tldp.org/guides.html, but as you can see they haven't been updated in quite a while. Most of the stuff is still relevant though, since the basics of setting up web services really haven't changed in 20 years if you don't touch the new kubertenes/container stuff. For your use-case, I think you'll gain a lot of benefit from just throughly reading this chapter (https://tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/chap_10.html https://tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/chap_10.html) of one of their books, and https://tldp.org/LDP/nag2/index.html https://tldp.org/LDP/nag2/index.html is a more comprehensive view of the same. They encompasses almost everything a hobbyist linux server looked like 15 years ago, and is a good starting point for getting the fundamentals.
