Honestly, listen more. Who is an effective speaker in your work or community? What kinds of phrases do they use to make people feel comfortable and heard? Echo and mimic what seems to work and see how it feels. When we have stressful events at work I pay attention to what our manager says and note what's effective. You can even write down useful phrases and try to incorporate them into your vocabulary. Pay attention to how people respond...if it's effective, keep it, if it's awkward, keep trying.
