I would hope whatever the response to a Russian nuclear attack would be, it would absolutely not be "Staying the course". That would signal weakness and that it is "ok" for not only Russia, but any other country to use nuclear weapons in a conflict as neither the US nor any other country would intervene. IMO a conventional warfare steamrolling of Russian forces by NATO allies all the way back to the Russia/Ukraine border would be an appropriate response, albeit likely an extremely unpopular one.
