> Popal’s remarks came after IDC projected 13.5 million folding smartphones will ship during 2022 – 1.1 percent of the total 1.352 billion smartphones expected the ship this year.
> IDC predicts compound annual growth of 38.7 percent across all foldables between 2021 and 2026, but even that impressive number will mean just 2.8 percent market share in the latter year.
even 1.1% seems too big judging by reality around me, I'd say market share is more like 0.1%, 2.8% prediction for 2026 seems more realistic
- Arnt 4y agoWhat's "0.1%" based on?
- Markoff 4y agoLooking at people staring at mobile while nobody holding folding phone. Or you live in some paradise where everyone around you don't stare at phone everywhere you move? I'd say it's quite representative if I look at people in restaurants, public transport, shops etc and I don't see single folding phone.
- Arnt 4y agoThis year about 200-250 million feature phones will be sold. You don't see people holding those in their hands, do you? Which suggests that people hold some kinds of phones in their hands in the bus, so the ones you see aren't a representative sample of what people buy. This begs the question: Are folding phones something people hold in their hands on the bus? I can't answer. I don't know. I would guess no, but that's really just a guess based on a single anecdote.
- Markoff 4y agoIt's not single anecdote, I see people holding phones everywhere - on sidewalk, in bus, when paying at checkout, in restaurants, in shops, etc. I am yet to see single person holding folding phone, but I can see daily hundreds of phones in people's hands.
