A lot of CS departments only teach big computing systems, not tiny ones. No microcontrollers, embedded systems, internet of things end point devices, etc. You can often take an engineering course in those things, but it seems like few people are developing a science of tiny computation. Maybe that's part of why microcontrollers have been stagnant for so long.
