For personal reasons, I do not browse the web from my computer. (2007)
- PaulHoule 4y agoI've dreamed about putting a system like archive.is between my web browser and the world.
- Crontab 4y agoI have too. I suppose that one could set up a headless chrome instance for that.
- MonkeyClub 4y agoCheck out https://archivebox.io/ https://archivebox.io/ as mentioned in the cousin post.
- navjack27 4y agoDo it! Set up archivebox
- nunobrito 4y agoThanks, did not know that one and looks great.
- controversial97 4y agoI'v had a box compromised via a web browser twice. First time was the nimbda worm in september 2001 which exploited a vulnerability in Internet Explorer 5. Second time was due to an out of date java runtime, probably around 2008. It was a virtual machine that I was using for some testing. The malware spewed email spam for a short time until I noticed. I consider it to be a good idea to use separate devices for work and casual web browsing.
- tarakat 4y ago> Theo de Raadt, now there's a paranoid man Can someone elaborate what makes de Raadt so paranoid?
- MonkeyClub 4y agoYeah he doesn't seem paranoid at all, just very aware of what holes the tech stack has. In fact, some people have argued that de Raadt (and the OpenBSD team) are not paranoid _enough_: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E9ga-CylWQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E9ga-CylWQ "36C3 - A systematic evaluation of OpenBSD's mitigations"
- pipeline_peak 4y agoLet’s just say, people call it OpenOCD. Of course this “obsession” has produced one of the worlds most secure OS’s.
- fsflover 4y agoI prefer browsing in a disposable (self-destructing) VM on Qubes OS, relying on hardware virtualization.
- snickerbockers 4y agoProbably an unpopular opinion but I liked the web better back when it was predominantly static (for the client) HTML with minimal/no imteractivity. It was more secure and it ran better even though we had slower connections and slower computers.
