Maybe not so much for the individual user's experience, but society as a whole. We're seeing that targeted (political) ads are a powerful way to hack a democracy. If everyone is seeing the same shitty advertisement, at least they have something to complain about together - even that much common ground is better in my opinion than everyone with their own version of reality.
