I'm in the visual effects industry. The public info we rely on is real world reference in youtube.
Now, sometimes things are easy-ish to find. Like explosions or fires. Or clips of movies with visual effects. And sometimes things are hard to find (or at least I get tripped up) like a close up of someone walking across dry straw. Then there's the problem that sometimes the footage is nice but it's 12 years old and of potato resolution.
That said a client is usually pretty well invested in getting the look of something they like and will sometimes provide good or decent reference. Additionally I'm not sure if any studio would be willing to pay for a library of well annotated youtube clips of everything.
Just spit-balling.
