Don't believe this to be a gender problem. It's only difficult if you don't know or care about the person enough. If you know someone well, and have meaningful conversations with them, you'll know the what would be the appropriate gift, if you don't, then maybe your relationship with that person is not that strong as you have believed. Sometimes it can be difficult to buy a gift for someone you really care about, but the fact that you made that effort is the real gift, not pressing the buy button in someone's wish list.
