It costs over an order of magnitude more to extract it from water. The worst part is that even at the current rates at the pump, it's hard to justify using hydrogen over batteries. If lithium batteries didn't exist, it may have been a good path for the long term future. In reality, it's only gonna be viable for very specific industrial use cases.
