I know someone who does this. She also refers to other people with PhDs as "Dr" even if they don't typically refer to themselves that way. I suspect it's some sort of cultural thing, and that with how much computer people tend to reject typical forms of formality we're just mostly on the far opposite side of whatever cultural thing it is.
