Open Letter to the WHOSTP and Subcommittee on Open Science
- blagie 4y agoI like #2 and #3. I don't like #1. Democratizing access to science is dramatically more important the democratizing publishing: 1) At the end of the day, anyone can publish on arxiv or similar. 2) If an elitist, exclusive journal charges a $2000 fee, the majority of authors will go elsewhere. It might continue to be elitist and exclusive, but prestigious? Perhaps not so much. If all that happened was all federally-funded research became open, the market would figure things out and we'd all be better off. Funding for open infrastructure makes complete sense, but #1 seems to place an unnecessary requirement in the way of progress.
