"With the alternative root approaches the alternative name space is accessed by changing the identity of the DNS root nameservers in the local DNS resolver. At that point, the resolver is placed into the context of the resolution of names within the alternative context. It is possible that the alternative root servers can contain the same content as the DNS root and augment this content with an additional set of top-level domains." On the networks I administer, I have been running a custom root zone with an "additional set of top-level domains" since 2008.
