Toyota didn't jump on the EV trend because EVs kinda suck in Japan. Electricity is mostly imported and increasing reliance on it is a bad idea for Japan. ICE is worse, but Hydrogen is better (Japan is an island), which is why Toyota has been pushing Hydrogen.
