Sure, but in this case they were telling the public that they'd reach the moon soon, even though they were just building a new sort of plane.
- ericd 4y agoFrom what I've heard, their original device was pretty incredible, but large, and they weren't able to keep all the same benefits in the portable version. But that original version is what got everyone so incredibly pumped up.
- muglug 4y agoThat doesn't match up with what people who know about optics think is possible: https://kguttag.com/2021/10/28/magic-leap-2-pt-3-soft-edge-occlusion-a-solution-for-investors-and-not-users/ https://kguttag.com/2021/10/28/magic-leap-2-pt-3-soft-edge-o...
- ericd 4y agoThis is a comment by Karl Guttag about the prototype I'm referring to: https://www.reddit.com/r/magicleap/comments/9al4lo/magic_leaps_glowing_fiber_prototypes_fibers_were/e4x32nb/ https://www.reddit.com/r/magicleap/comments/9al4lo/magic_lea...
- muglug 4y agoYeah, and in that comment he only mentions the existence of focus planes, not hard-edge occlusion (which elsewhere Guttag says is essentially physically impossible)
- ericd 4y agoI didn't say anything about hard-edge occlusion? I guess I see that your original comment was about that, I was just responding to the comments further down.
- solardev 4y agoIncredibly unlikely. If sizing was the only constraint, they could've easily showed a real demo of the bigger device. They were just lying.
- ericd 4y agoYou're free not to believe it, but this is based on people who were recruited by the company, and that large device is what convinced them to join. EDIT: Here's Karl Guttag commenting on Reddit about the version I'm referring to, The Beast: https://www.reddit.com/r/magicleap/comments/9al4lo/magic_leaps_glowing_fiber_prototypes_fibers_were/e4x32nb/ https://www.reddit.com/r/magicleap/comments/9al4lo/magic_lea... It's fundamentally different from what the ML1 ended up being.
- solardev 4y agoShrug. I'll believe it when they show it to the public.
