I made a snarky (maybe somewhat undeserved) tweet comparing Magic Leap to Theranos last year that pissed off Rony Abovitz. He pointed out that they were shipping their enterprise product. I still think the promise was wildly oversold, but at least they are making something.
- dannyw 4y agoHolmes has been convicted for fraud, Abovitz hasn't and probably won't be.
- jscheel 4y agoAbsolutely, hence me saying "undeserved". Here's the exchange, hopefully you can see where I clarified that I wasn't accusing him of fraud: https://twitter.com/jscheel/status/1393781004188389379 https://twitter.com/jscheel/status/1393781004188389379
- 6stringmerc 4y agoMagic Leap was a lot closer to the flying car that only had the one prototype but seemingly kept raising tons of cash…
- jscheel 4y agoI remember reading about Moller in the 90s, thinking “wow the future is gonna be amazing.”
- wombat-man 4y agoI think in that analogy, if Holmes had at least accepted limitations and started with a lab that fit on the back of a truck, but still needed a vial of blood as a step 1. The vision may be possible but you gotta start somewhere and you can't just do R&D for 20 years without revenue.
- gonehome 4y agoProbably more like general magic - lots of hype, promised more than what they could actually do. What they made was underwhelming and poorly timed. AR makes sense if the hardware is possible, I’m not sure we’re there yet.
