They built them only for non economic reasons. Either because they wanted material for bombs, or as national vanity projects or because they convinced themselves it would be cheap. If you want those reasons, go for it. Iran for instance is pursuing at least one of these goals when it works towards nuclear "power". Just don't expect affordable electricity at the end...
