Too Many Wannabe Elites: A Story of Russia (and Possibly America)
- antonomon 4y agoA historian claims a unique theory called elite overproduction can predict social unrest. Macrohistorian Peter Turchin argues that it allowed for nihilism in Czarist Russia and eventually the end of the regime. In America, it's still unclear.
- ZeroGravitas 4y agoI don't like the term, as it seems to imply a zero-sum solution of educating less people, but I thought it was accepted that "revolutions" are generally led by the ones who will gain most from the new regime. Like the Magna Carta limiting the King so the nobles have more power, US Independence where "all men are equal" but rich white men are top of the tree and so on.
- antonomon 4y agoI agree with you, the term does tend to imply that. However, I think it has less to do with that, and more to do with structural underemployment among people who are very educated which creates resentment.
