Just from casual observation it seems hurricane predictions are getting less accurate also. The forecast for Ian changed a lot, several times in the last week, which resulted in some people not realizing the prediction had changed and put them in danger. Rainfall and storm surge have become bigger factors in the damage caused, and seem even less accurately predicted (initial max predictions for rainfall from Ian were 6-10 inches, that later became in excess of 18 inches). The location of waste treatment plants, industries that deal with toxins, and critical infrastructure are not yet widely taken into account in long term preparation for storms, and often not even in short term preparations (the big plan for waste treatment plants for Ian was to pre-release raw sewage?!
What kind of plan is that?)
Early on in the covid pandemic US weather forecasting lost accuracy because there were fewer planes flying (planes collect atmospheric data used in forecasting). Anyone know if that source of data has recovered to where it was before? From the news I get the sense that there are still fewer planes flying because people are still not traveling as much.
