Ask HN: Is AWS re:Invent worth paying your own way to go
My employer isn’t able to pay for me to attend the AWS re:Invent conference in person. However, I’m considering paying my own way there. It’s a bit expensive to attend in person, but I was curious if folks who have attended have found value. I see it as a potential good way to gain some knowledge and network with individuals doing work similar to me.
I’ve been doing cloud-native development for the past 3-4 years now primarily using serverless technologies like Lambda, DybamoDB, step functions, S3 etc to build mission-critical applications. I’m always interested in learning new things and networking. AWS, cloud computing, and serverless computing are areas I am passionate about.
- yuppie_scum 4y agoIt’s fun, but I can think of a lot more fun and interesting ways to spend $2000-3000. Also all the sessions end up free on YouTube.
- anderiv 4y agoAgreed. Having been to re:Invent several times, I’ve come to believe it’s not worth attending regardless of who is paying. It’s too big, too much time is spent just moving from session to session or waiting in lines for sessions. Save your money - watch the keynotes live and then catch as many sessions on YouTube as you desire from the comfort of your own home.
- is_true 4y agoIf you want to learn new things wait till they upload the videos to YouTube. That way you can learn at your own pace
- borplk 4y agoShort answer: No. Long answer: No. The price assumes your cashed up employer is paying. It doesn't make sense as a personal expense just for learning.
