Embedding Lua instead inventing your own DSL is often the right choice. Two projects that come to mind in this respect are Neovim/Vim and AwesomeWM/i3. Neovim and AwesomeWM use Lua for configuration and scripting instead of inventing their own language/format. Vim and i3 do have their own languages. I really like having the same basic tools for scripting in multiple programs.
