Lua doesn't stand well entirely on its own. You could write command-line utilities with it, but if you're finally leaving the traditional masochism of using C and C++ for that, then you might as well go all the way to Python or Ruby.
I think Lua was always intended to be used for making other software programmable, at least that's where it seems it works best.
Something to do: count and compare the number of applications written in Lua to the number of applications using Lua.
