> RSD, also called sexual racism, often manifests as website users expressing preferences for partners of certain races, ethnicities, physical attributes or stereotypical behaviors in their profiles
I mean, the continued existence in multiracial societies of distinct racial groups is concrete evidence of -- in the literal sense of the word -- discrimination. Is this not ok?
On the one hand, it's maybe not surprising that norms around nondiscrimination that we see in hiring and renting should also start to appear in reference to dating.
On the other, it feels a bit like that repurposing of otherwise-leftist rhetoric (about inequality and just redistribution) that talks about sexual inequality and "involuntary celibacy". It's just another form of poverty, the argument goes, to again be solved by government redistribution. Of course, this runs into our beliefs about the sanctity of women's sexual choices.
Or are all contradictions resolved through reference to an implicit power hierarchy of the semantic categories involved?
Whatever the case, it feels like a balloon is being floated here to ask, "how far can I push these concepts?"
For example, gender and sex discrimination are also unacceptable in employment contexts. Why should it be ok in dating?
- PaulHoule 4y agoThis particular article, however, has nothing to do with women's sexual choice because it is about gay dating.

- FooBarBizBazz 4y agoMy examples used heterosexuals, but the principles work whatever sexual orientation you're talking about. Presumably gay men have the same inviolable rights, around who they love or what they do with their bodies, that straight women do.
- PaulHoule 4y agoThe police union would claim they have an inviolable right to shoot somebody who is running away in the back and it’s a position that makes sense if you assume their point of view. Similarly, some would say an employer has an inviolable right to hire or not hire somebody. When you look at it collectively though, most would say the government can promote full employment or at least fight unemployment. A firm doesn’t have to hire a particular black person but if it never hires a black person that’s another thing. Sexual choice is frequently self-destructive and potentially destructive to society as a whiole. It is not at all fashionable in 2022 to talk about this but throughout most of history it has been taken for granted that your reproductive capacity doesn’t just belong to you but belongs to your species insofar as it effects who is going to be around when you are gone. One basic conflict that your sexual choice in 2022 also belongs to the you in 2042, who might have a very different perspective than you do now. In particular many women are making sexual choices that put off reproduction now and eventually find their fertility is expiring and now they can’t make the sexual choice to do what many people find is one of the most meaningful things you can do. The corresponding male complaint (who suffer at age 20 as opposed to age 40) is on the order of ‘systemic racism’. In fact sexual attraction, as in being a victim of seduction, involves a certain alienation from the self. You will always misunderstand something that is fundamentally interpersonal if you have no language other than individualism to talk about it. Roughly it seems that 80% of the women are attracted to 20% of men and this makes for a many great thought experiments. It explains why women frequently say ‘Men (I am attracted to) won’t commit’ because those fortunate (dare I say privileged?) men don’t have to commit. The experience of the average man is invisible and unheard because we are stoic, tend to blame ourselves instead of society, and when we do speak people erase us and replace our image with very privileged men like Harvey Weinstein.
