Filament costs arent that large if you uze regular PLA or recycle your own PET from plastic bottles. $20 dollars of PLA is enough to print two gridfinity base units (5x4 and 4x3 weighted) and fill up most of the units with printed modules. The advantages of printing your own are customization: IKEA and the dollar store don’t sell containers that form fit much of anything, let alone allow you to store a precision caliper in the upright position, for example.
