I learned a lot about this by reading "Venture Deals" by Brad Feld, which covered other things about preferred shares and how cap tables work, that helped me understand how to think about my stock options (e.g. just because I have X% of options doesn't mean that a sale of the company at $10M would mean I get X% of that -- as I naively thought many many years ago -- but it depends on the preferred shareholders and so on). It's very complicated and the potential tax implications can be a little daunting and leave folks in the negative if not properly understood!
